Have you ever wondered how to organize your ideas for a podcast or Internet radio show? Here’s a simple outline that will help you organize your content AND create interest in your products or services.

Podcasts and Internet radio shows can be a very effective medium for communicating with your potential clients. They allow you the opportunity to share your bits of wisdom, communicate important information and connect through content. Experts agree, CONTENT IS KING, but I believe context is QUEEN! Just because you have something to say doesn’t mean you know to organize it.

The first question you need to ask yourself is:

Have extra radio batteries (preferably a battery pack for alkaline batteries) - Have 12VDC power cords for all radio equipment including hand held radios. Your emergency tool kit should include basic tools for electrical & electronic work and a multi-meter. Keep HF & VHF radio equipment (including antennas) ready to go at a moments’ notice. Apr 15, 2016 Everybody likes a clear social media policy. Every radio station needs a clear social media policy, especially given the high-profile nature of its air talent. The point of this policy is not to restrict your employees, but to keep them from getting themselves into trouble. Yourselfers and sharing it on their site, iTunes, social media `and BlogTalkRadio.com. Results The Down and Dirty show for Sears was successful in generating engagement around the Craftsman brand:. No. 1 DIY talk radio show on the Internet with over 4.1 million listens. Top Pick and Voted Most Newsworthy and Notable podcasts of 2011 by iTunes.

“What does my audience want to know more about?” Consider your target audience and their needs before you design a program and develop content. If your target audience is entrepreneurs who want to engage their clients by using social media, don’t generalize your content to reach just any business owner. Speak specifically to the needs of the entrepreneur.

The second question you need to ask yourself is:

“How can create compelling content that succinctly communicates my expertise AND meets my target audiences’ needs?” We live in a world of sound bites and quick information, and you podcast or Internet radio show needs to honor that reality too. When considering your topic and content, keep it short and useful. Instead of providing a list of 10 things an entrepreneur can do to engage in social media, cut it down to 5 and go into detail about how to do it. Go ahead — give away a few secrets. You will garner the respect of your audience and gain followers, and yes – clients. People like (and need) to buy from and work with other people they trust and respect. Two great examples of this model are John Jantsch and Mari Smith. Both are very successful experts in the marketing and business development arena AND they provide some of the most useful information out there, for FREE. It’s because they give away their secrets that I turn to them professionally and refer others who need help.

  • Icecast (Icecast 2) is a streaming media server which will allow users to stream our Internet radio station, and Mixxx is a DJ mixing application (which you can also use as a simple music player in this case, if that's what you need) that we'll use to feed the audio stream to the Icecast2 streaming server, thanks to its Live Broadcasting feature.

So, once you know your target audience and you have created content to meet their needs, you need to lay it out in a format that will help you communicate effectively. Below is a sample of the outline we use when storyboarding our podcasts and radio shows. If you would like a copy of this template, I’d be happy to email it to you for free.
